Family Violence Prevention
In 2021 and 2022 Shirley Village Project ran a series of open community meetings to talk about family violence in Shirley and what we can do to reduce it. Out of this a community plan was created. We are working together with services/agencies who support people living with family violence here in Shirley so our residents know what support is out there. We want to make it easier for people to use these supports or to get friends and neighbours the support they need.
Shirley Village Project is offering training and support to some key people within the community who are well connected with residents and are in supportive roles. We are working together to give people the knowledge and support to enable them to connect people with resources that they need. Through the year we invite different organisations to come and chat to us about what they do. These info sessions are open to residents and professionals who work in Shirley. You can just listen, or ask any questions you may have. These will be listed in the Shirley Shine newsletter.
On Wednesdays at the Community Centre 11-12:30, Emma is available if anyone would like to chat about anything related to family violence, whether it's wondering about how to help a friend or neighbour, or sharing your own experience and suggestions for what might help others.
Shirley Village Project has created stickers for Shirley mailboxes, to show that we are striving to be a community full of safe and loving homes. We are working together to create a family violence free Shirley! Join the movement and choose a sticker for your own mailbox.
A peer support group for women, particularly those who have experienced family harm, runs every second Thursday in collaboration with Barnardos.
