Shirley Village Project
Ko Ōraka tō tatau kaika
Shirley is our village
Vision: Shirley is a colourful, caring, connected community
Our mission is to achieve a shared local vision: to make Shirley a caring, colourful, connected community where residents thrive. A place where neighbours know and look after each other, people have a real sense of ownership and pride in their surroundings and community, and residents are better equipped and have the self-belief that they can build a positive future for themselves, their whanau, and their community.
Kaupapa: The approaches that guide us
Place Based
Our focus is residents in the Shirley neighbourhood inside Shirley Rd, Hills rd, Innes Rd/QEII Dr and Marshlands Rd. We recognise community has many connections beyond these boundaries.
Community Led Development
Residents are community experts, empowered to use their skills, knowledge and strengths, to lead community change. Based on the Inspiring Communities CLD model.
Collective Impact
Bringing together residents, community groups, local organisations, businesses, NGO’s agencies, and funders around a shared vision and to support resident-led community change.
Positive Youth Development
A strength- based approach with the mindset that it takes a village to raise a child. Based on Positive Youth Development Aotearoa.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi
We recognise Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the foundation document of Aotearoa New Zealand. We recognise we are working within the takiwā of Ngāi Tūāhuriri. We will seek to engage with mana whenua and work in ways that are equitable and responsive to tangata whenua needs.
Real change
Removing barriers and seeking positive, sustainable and lasting change.
Organisation
Administrative and governance support for the Shirley Village Project is provided by the Shirley Community Trust and our key funding partner is the Department of Internal Affairs Community Led Development Programme. The Shirley Village Project's Steering Group is made up of a variety of people who live, work and play in Shirley, who represent residents, community groups, schools, businesses and agencies. Currently four people are contracted part time to support residents and other volunteers in the village project's mahi (work).
